What is frizzy hair? Why does hair become frizzy? Can you get rid of it? There are many questions, and we’ll try to break down what frizzy hair is and different ways to eliminate frizz—once and for all!

What is frizzy hair?
Frizzy hair is essentially synonymous with dryness. It is the opposite of shiny and sleek hair. Frizzy hair lacks moisture and natural oils. Hair becomes frizzy when it is dehydrated and cannot retain its moisture properly.
Why does hair become frizzy?
Frizz can occur for several reasons. For example, curly or wavy hair is more prone to frizz because it naturally requires more moisture. Some common causes of frizz include coloring or bleaching your hair, using shampoos with sulfates (which dry out the hair), exposure to chlorinated water, and skipping conditioner.
7 Tips to Get Rid of Frizzy Hair
1. Start using a sulfate-free shampoo.
Sulfates are commonly found in shampoos, soaps, and dishwashing liquids because they create a rich lather and effectively dissolve grease. However, they can also dry out both the hair and scalp, causing irritation. Since frizzy hair is already dry, it’s important to avoid additional drying factors. Try switching to a sulfate-free shampoo. Initially, your hair might feel oilier or not completely clean—this happens because your scalp needs time to adjust and rebalance. Over time, you’ll likely notice that you need to wash your hair less often (since your scalp stops overproducing oil) and that your lengths feel less dry and lifeless.
2. Always use conditioner after shampooing.
We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again—if you skip conditioner, you leave the hair cuticle open. Open cuticles lead to frizz and make the hair more vulnerable to external damage. Conditioner also provides moisture and nourishment, which is essential for dry, frizzy hair. Choose a high-quality salon-grade conditioner to ensure that your hair gets the best ingredients for both short-term and long-term health. If you have frizzy hair, focus on finding a conditioner that prioritizes hydration.
3. Avoid washing your hair with hot water.
Heat dries out the hair and can contribute to more frizz. Try to wash your hair with lukewarm water instead. Of course, taking a warm shower is comforting—especially in the colder months. If it’s hard to shower in lukewarm water, keep the water warm for your body but turn down the temperature slightly when rinsing your hair.
4. Reduce the use of heat styling tools.
As mentioned before, heat dries out and damages the hair. If you want to prevent and eliminate frizz, cutting down on heat styling is a great step. When you do use heat styling tools, always use a heat protectant—it won’t prevent all damage, but it significantly reduces it. So, don’t forget your heat protectant! 😊
5. Use hair products that provide moisture and protection.
Focus on products designed to hydrate the hair, and try to avoid drying ingredients such as sulfates and alcohol.
6. Use a hair oil to tame frizz.
Hair oil creates a protective layer around the hair strands and locks in moisture. A high-quality oil also nourishes and softens the hair. Curly hair, for example, tends to be dry because the natural oils produced by the scalp don’t travel down the hair strands as easily as they do with straight hair. That’s why applying a good hair oil to the lengths is a great idea.
7. A quick fix:
Lightly spray a bit of hairspray over the most frizzy strands to help them settle and create the appearance of smoother, less frizzy hair.
